Intel's Harkins on Mobile Security

Analyzing Results of New Survey from ISMG, Accellion
Intel's Harkins on Mobile Security
Most organizations rate their mobile device security efforts as poor, in need of improvement or just adequate, according to the latest ISMG survey. So where are the security gaps? Malcolm Harkins of Intel offers insights.

Some 81 percent of survey respondents say the security of content accessed via mobile devices also does not get high marks. The new mobile security survey, Beyond BYOD: 2013 Mobile Security Strategies, was produced by Information Security Media Group and sponsored by Accellion. The survey includes more than 200 respondents across global regions and industries.

Organizations need to focus more broadly on improving data security, says Harkins, Intel's chief security and privacy officer, and a pioneer in the corporate bring your own device trend.

"The thing [organizations] have to do is ... establish a cross-functional mobile governance view of this, so you can understand the dynamics of what the business is trying to achieve," Harkins says. With a more global view of goals and challenges, security leaders can hone in on the true inhibitors to mobile security. "That way, you can focus on: Is it an application issue you need to work on in a particular category? Is it the encryption? The identity and access management? You can get into the uses and where the company is trying to achieve value with the mobile device proliferation."

In an interview about the survey results, Harkins discusses:

  • How to improve security of content accessed via mobile;
  • Effective user awareness techniques;
  • New approaches to IAM.

Harkins is vice president and chief security and privacy officer at Intel Corp. In this role, he's responsible for managing the risk, controls, privacy, security and other related compliance activities for all of Intel's information assets, products and services. Before becoming Intel's first CSPO, he was the chief information security officer, reporting to the chief information officer. Harkins also held roles in finance, procurement and various business operations.
