Cybersecurity Veterans Specify What the Trump Administration Must Do Now
How to Secure US Elections - Before It's Too Late

Leading the latest edition of the ISMG Security Report: Two cybersecurity veterans detail the specific steps the Trump administration must take now if it has any hope of safeguarding the U.S. midterm elections in November against Russian interference, whether via hack attacks or social media and propaganda campaigns.

Their advice comes on the heels of President Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence, as well as the heads of the FBI, the National Security Agency, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Council, on Thursday appearing in the White House Briefing Room to talk election security.

"We acknowledge the threat. It is real. It is continuing," Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, told reporters. "We are doing everything we can to have a legitimate election that everyone can have trust in."

The president did not attend the briefing (see How Trump Talks About Russian Hacking).

The repeat warnings from the nation's intelligence chiefs followed Facebook's announcement this week that it suspended eight pages and about 24 accounts tied to political influence campaign.

In this report, you'll hear (click on player beneath image to listen):

  • Ed Amoroso, the former CISO of AT&T, offer a three-pronged approach to ensuring election integrity;
  • Retired Brigadier General Greg Touhill, who served as the first federal CISO, share guidance on protecting against interference at the ballot box and how "a free and open press" remains the best way for combating "influence operations" disseminated via social media and other channels;
  • ISMG's Managing Editor, Security and Technology, Jeremy Kirk, analyze Iowa Health Group's data breach involving a business email compromise attack (see Iowa Health Group Data Breach Hits 1.4 Million Patients).

Amoroso and Touhill will be featured speakers at ISMG's Security Summit in New York, to be held Aug. 14-15. Get more details on his session, as well as other speakers at the New York Security Summit.

The ISMG Security Report appears on this and other ISMG websites on Fridays. Don't miss the July 20 and July 27 editions, which respectively discuss Trump's views on Russian election meddling and the FBI's efforts to thwart election interference.
