Security Trends of 2022: Research Report Analysis Interview
Ransomware, Data Breaches and Beyond: Chris Borales on Recent Gigamon FindingsChris Borales, senior product marketing manager for ThreatINSIGHT and security solutions at Gigamon, and Tony Morbin of Information Security Media Group discuss the findings of a recent survey of cybersecurity professionals about emerging security trends in 2022, conducted for Gigamon by ISMG.
Borales says, "These results mirror exactly what we're seeing in the market today." He discusses how ransomware attackers are evolving "at the speed of business," and says, "They are putting significant resources into improving their business model."
Near the end of last year, Gigamon saw 130 different types of malware strains associated with ransomware. It is very difficult for the standard type of perimeter security vendors to keep up with this pace of innovation. Supply chain attacks and insider threats also give ransomware threat actors fertile ground to find new and unique ways to make more money off this attack surface area.
Here are some key findings of the survey.
Leading Threats
The leading threat concerns are:
- Ransomware - 80%
- Supply chain attack - 65%
- Insider threat - 57%
- Zero-days - 52%
- DDoS - 33%
- Cryptojacking - 15%
Twenty percent of the respondents reported being affected by suppliers who had been the victim of a ransomware attack, 13% had suffered a ransomware attack themselves, and 55% expect to suffer a ransomware attack in the year ahead.
Increased Budget
Seventy percent of the respondents say their cybersecurity budget will increase in 2022. A quarter of those say their budget will increase by 25%, and 14% say it will increase more than that.
The respondents said the most effective way to spend their additional budget would be:
- Network visibility - 49%
- ID access - 47%
- EDR - 38%
- SIM - 37%
- WAFF - 25%
- IPS - 19%
- Firewalls - 23%
- NDR - 21%
- IPS - 19%
