Cloud Computing Expert Becomes DISA's CIO
A Defense Information Systems Agency's cloud computing expert, Henry Sienkiewicz, is the agency's new chief information officer.

Sienkiewicz had been serving as the technical program director for the DISA's Computing Services Directorate and replaces Roberta Stempfley, who left the agency last month to become director of the National Cybersecurity Division at the Department of Homeland Security. Sienkiewicz took over as CIO on Monday.

In his role as technical program director, Sienkiewicz helped shepherd the Defense Department's nascent cloud computing initiatives. In an interview last year with GovInfoSecurity.com, Sienkiewicz said he saw cloud computing as another way information technology can serve the nation's war fighters by finding appropriate innovations and introducing them as rapidly as they can be secured.

An Army veteran, he left the service as a captain and began a career in the hospitality industry. In 2005, Sienkiewicz founded Open Travel Software, an open source, open standards software company that provides web-based enterprise resource planning solutions for small and medium hotels and car rental agencies. A reservist, Sienkiewicz was called up in 2004, and during his mobilization tour, he served with U.S. Central Command J6 as the chief, business management branch. He was assigned to DISA as a reservist in 2005. Sienkiewicz retired from the Army Reserve in 2008, with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Army Lt. Gen. Carroll Pollett, DISA's director, also announced that Paige Atkins will become the director of the Strategic Planning and Information Directorate, effective June 15. She was previously director of the Defense Spectrum Organization. The current chief strategic planner, John Garing, will retire June 30 after nearly 40 years of military and federal civilian service.

Pollett tapped Daniel Bradford as principal director for Global Information Grid (GIG) the commander and as senior technical director/chief engineer with the Army Network Enterprise Technology Command/9th Signal Command. His reporting date has not yet been established. Bradford replaces Richard Williams, who retired in April.

DISA is the Department of Defense combat support agency that engineers and provides command and control capabilities and the enterprise infrastructure to continuously operate and assure a global net-centric enterprise in direct support to joint warfighters, national level leaders and other mission partners and coalition partners across the full spectrum of military operations.
