Varonis has dedicated most of its engineering resources to SaaS since the onset of COVID-19 to provide more automation to customers, says CEO Yaki Faitelson.

The company has focused on delivering robust data protection to customers without them having to dedicate hardware or personnel to the task, Faitelson says. Varonis also offers access patterns to many data stores from its SaaS platform, which Faitelson says allows the company to rapidly deploy threat detection and response along with services in areas such as data protection, classification and forensics (see: A Data-Centric Approach to Zero Trust Strategy).

"We believe it's just a complete game changer," Faitelson says. "We were able to do this complete technical transformation and take all of these years of moving from perpetual to subscription and building all these licenses to really a world-class SaaS platform that will enable our customers to get to a lot of automated value."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Faitelson also discusses:

  • How secrets discovery builds upon Varonis' heritage in data security;
  • What sets Varonis' approach to data security apart from rivals such as BigID;
  • The impact of layoffs in November on Varonis' R&D and technology strategy.

Faitelson is responsible for leading the management, strategic direction and execution of the Varonis vision. With extensive cross-functional experience in cybersecurity, networking, operating systems, business applications and storage, he saw the necessity and opportunity for data-centric security automation. Together, Faitelson and Ohad Korkus conceived and architected the MetaData Framework technology that now serves as the foundation for the Varonis Data Security Platform. Faitelson holds numerous patents for permissions visualization, simulation and data analysis. Prior to Varonis, he held leadership positions in the global professional services and systems integration divisions of NetVision and Network Appliance.
