White House Site Among Those Hacked
Count the White House and Pentagon as among the targets of hackers - allegedly from North Korea - who assaulted government and business websites that started over the Independence Day weekend. The targets included the National Security Agency; Departments of Homeland Security, State and Treasury; New York Stock Exchange; Nasdaq; and The Washington Post, according to a report by the Associated Press, which said many of the organizations appeared to successfully blunt the sustained computer assaults. Still, the news agency said, Treasury, Federal Trade Commission and Secret Service continued to report problems days after the attack commenced.
South Korea's National Intelligence told a group of South Korean lawmakers Wednesday it believes that North Korea or North Korean sympathizers in the South were behind the attacks, which included South Korean government sites, an aide to one of the lawmakers briefed on the information told the AP.
DHS spokeswoman Amy Kudwa told the news service that its U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team issued a notice to federal departments and other partner organizations about the problems and "advised them of steps to take to help mitigate against such attacks."
