Second Edition Of ISMG's Global Summit Sees Firm TractionRisk-oriented security and resilience are the cornerstones of a future-proof strategy for the enterprise today. With Indian enterprises increasingly going digital, this is the core message upon which ISMG's second Data Breach Summit focused. The event kicked off today at the Taj West End, Bengaluru.

Technology alone is not enough to tackle the constant threat of data breaches today, said the summit's keynote speaker, Dr. A. S. Ramasastri, who is director at IDRBT. Focus on governance, policy, skills and robust ecosystems are the urgent priorities. The topic for his keynote session was "Managing Data Breaches: Assembling the Jigsaw Puzzle."
"The need of the hour is to emphasize on areas like online big data analytics system and digital forensics. Crime investigation in the digital world also needs to be improved," Ramasastri added. He also highlighted the need to have a hybrid security model, which spans across the corporate, sectoral, national and global levels.
This is especially the case in India, given the lack of any kind of mandated disclosure, despite the increasing number of attacks being reported in the wild by practitioners. Challenges in managing data breaches leveraging the latest vulnerabilities and vectors means that organizations must look beyond the traditional approach to security, which is still where the Indian marketplace is evolving from, experts at the summit say.
Key Messages
Against the backdrop of the year 2015, which set a benchmark for breaches and proved that any data of any perceived value is at risk of being targeted, Indian organizations must recognize the need for a practical, risk-based approach, which was one of the key messages at this summit.
The lineup of speakers and the different areas being addressed distinguishes the event, says Biju Tilak, mobile security strategist, IBM Security. "A complete and holistic takeaway is of great value. The community needs more collaboration and a platform like this aggregates all these core issues and disseminates them to the community at large, which I feel is of great value," he says.
Tilak was a speaker at the summit today and spoke on the mobile vulnerability landscape in Indian enterprises.
The second key message that set the tone for the conversations was: How to survive attacks and thrive in the face of them, given that these threats aren't going away.
"I hope that the Data Breach Summit will provide us with a lot of insights around how to tackle the emerging threats around areas like cloud and mobile. Another area of interest for me is how the banking sector will embrace the transition to virtual payment systems," shares Mahesh Kalyanaraman, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Security, Tata Communications.
Participants such as Manoj K Sarangi, Vice President, Chief Information Security Officer, HCL are looking for "actionable information."
"We hope that the Summit sets the right environment which fosters a meaningful discussion in the industry," added Sudeep Kumar Das, Lead-Sales Engineering, EMC India.
Hot Sessions
Other themes at the event include security of critical infrastructure and a fresh look at emerging threats, with a specific focus on the Indian context. Legacy strategy and mindsets mean that practitioners are constantly fighting off the omnipresent and relentless waves of successful targeted cyberattacks. Dr. Ramasastri's session provided an overview of the different elements that go into the management of a data breach in India.
Some of the other speakers included Shree Parthasarathy, Partner and National leader for cyber risk at Deloitte, who shared recommendations on making the threat intelligence available to organizations; and Shivakumar Sriram, who talked about securing payment innovations taking place in the country. Sivakumar is Chief Risk Officer South Asia at VISA.
This summit is the first in this series this year, with the second being planned in June at Mumbai, and others across the country subsequently. You can get more information on ISMG's Data Breach Summits here.
